Thenmala is situated in Thiruvananthapuram in Shenkottai Road. It is located at a height of 1,640 ft above the sea level. Thenmala is famous for the honey which had several medicinal properties. It is this place which is the first planned ecotourism project of our country.

Thenmala is covered with acres of evergreen forest. This lies around 500m above sea level and is a habitat to a wide variety of flora and fauna. There are several beautiful waterfalls, picnic spots, plantations etc. which attracts the tourists of all types. Thenmala is a best place for doing all leisure activities. This is spread across the hill ranges that lies in the districts Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta.

The pilgrim centres that can be visited from here include the Ayyappa temples at Kulathupuzha, Aryankavu and Achankovil. In Punalur there is a Hanging bridge which is on the route to Thenmala. There are two waterfalls namely the Manalar falls and the Kumbavurutty falls. Manalar falls can be seen only after the rainy season.

There are Adventure Zones here, where Nature trails are conducted to take the tourists for an adventurous trip through the hill. The other activities include trekking and rock climbing in which the rocks are fitted with ropes and pegs for the tourists to do rock climbing.

In the full day trekking programme, you can travel through many hills. You can also see the Palaruvi waterfalls and rubber plantations on the way. Tourist guides will also accompany with the trekkers which is of much help.
