Rainforest Trek at Chimmini

Chimmini wildlife sanctuary is located near the Nelliampathy in Thrissur district. It was established in the year 1984 and part of this lies near to the Peechi-Vazhani wildlife sanctuary and the next part lies near the Parambikulam sanctuary. Chimmini is at a height of about 40 m to 1,116 m above sea level. The highest point here is the Punda Peak.  The forest types include tropical evergreen, semi evergreen and moist deciduous forests. This area is ideal for both wildlife and plants.

The nature lovers and bird watchers get a great opportunity to enjoy them while trekking in the wilderness of Chimmini. There are about 160 different species of birds. if lucky one can get a glance of the Southern Birdwing which is the largest butterfly in India, the Blue Mormon which is the second largest butterfly of Western Ghats or the Atlas Moth which is the largest in the world. Some of the animals found here include lion tailed macaque, tiger etc.

Some of the ecotourism activities are trekking, bamboo rafting etc. Here the trekking programmes are organized by the forest department. To trek only in the outskirts of the sanctuary it requires only maximum half day. If you need to trek deep into the forest, 1 day trip is needed. The best time to visit here is during the months between October and March.
