Puliyarmala Jain Temple, Kalpetta Wayanad

Puliyarmala Jain Temple is a historic temple located in Puliyarmala, in Wayanad Kalpetta, and is dedicated to Jain saints. Puliyarmala Jain Temple is situated at six kilometers from Kalpetta. This temple is also called as Anathanatha swami temple. This splendid Ananthanatha Swami Temple is dedicated to Ananthanatha Swami. According to Jain faith, Ananthanatha swami is a very prominent saint. In Puliyarmala Jain temple the entrance doors are skillfully carved. The entrance door holds three panels. At the outer entrance, there is a carved granite pillar exactly in front of the gate. The temple also has the Stupa. This Stupa is constructed in traditional Dravidian fashion of construction. This Stupa has brightly painted elaborate carvings. These carvings go up in a pyramid shape. At the top of the Stupa there is a carving of Jain god Mahavir. Mahavira is the name most frequently used to denote the Indian sage Vardhamana.

Vardhamana established what are today regarded to be the central doctrines of Jainism. As per Jain tradition, Vardhamana was the 24th and the final Tirthankara. At Puliyarmala Jain Temple, the main shrine has small steps covered with 20 different Jain idols. The small steps also have symbols made of stone, brass, ceramic and gold. The largest idol is the brass idol standing straight without hair and arms. You can also view a large swastika painted in the wall right behind the brass idol. Apart from Jains, other multicultural tourists, interested guests also can visit this remarkable Jain temple. The temple inners are well carved and present a very calm environment. At Upavan, one of the important sightseeing spots is this Puliyarmala Jain temple which exhibits rare form of Jain architecture.
