Pathiramanal in Alappuzha – Kerala

Pathiramanal is an island that is situated in the border of Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. The word meaning of ‘Pathiramanal’ is ‘Sands of Night’.  The total area of this island is estimated to be around 20 hectares. Until the early seventies, this island was under private ownership and later it came under the control of the government. At present it is a major tourist destination and is not inhabited by any. This island is situated on the Vembanad lake and it is a spectacular sight to see the lake from both sides of the island. It is possible to reach this island only by travelling in a boat.

There are large species of migratory birds found here besides 91 local species. It is considered as a paradise for the bird lovers. It is also famous for its wide variety of flora which includes rare plants that have medicinal values etc. the tourists arriving at this place can enjoy the scenic beauty as well as engage in bird watching.

This island is located at a distance of 1.5 kms from the Muhamma boat jetty and around 4 kms from Kumarakom. It is easily accessible by boat from Alappuzha. It is a great experience to take a journey through the backwaters.
