Place to visit in Nedumkandam, Idukki

Nedumkandam known as the capital of High-Ranges is the major town of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki district of Kerala state in India. This is in the high-ranges. Nedumkandam is a fast growing town in Idukki and expected to become one of the large cities in Kerala in 15 years.Nedumkandam lies in between the Periyar wild life reserve in Thekkady and the hill station of Munnar. This is a land of migratory farmers, most of whom came from Central Travancore, Kottayam, Palai and Muvattupuzha in search of better pastures (cultivable lands) and ended up in the reserve forests, which used to be there in 1960, but now has disappeared into stores, giving way to the modern township.

Here cardamom, pepper and coffee are the major crops. Besides these a wide verity of other cash crops are also being cultivated. Nedumkandam is a longish town extending along the 3 km stretch of road somewhat midway between Thekkady and Munnar. A town with a history of less than four decades. It is a testimony to the high rate of migration from the low lands of Kerala in this time span.
