Mattupetty Dam – A Must Visit places in Munnar

Mattupetty Dam, near Munnar in Idukki District, is a storage Concrete Gravity dam built in the mountains of Kerala, India to conserve water for hydroelectricity. It has been a vital source of power, yielding along with other such dams, huge revenue to the states. The large amount of perennially available water allows wild animals and birds to flourish. However salinity caused by irrigation and water-logging are of concern to environmentalists.

Munnar is located near the confluence of the mountain streams of Muthirappuzha River, Chanduvarai River and Kundale River.

Mattupetti is a hill station situated in Idukki district at a distance of 13 kms from Munnar. It has a height of about 1700 m above sea level and lies in Western Ghat. It is well famous for its specialized dairy farm called as The Indo – Swiss Livestock Project. There are different varieties of cattle found here. The visitors can take a look at some of the cattle sheds in this farm. A famous picnic spot near to this is the Mattupetti Lake and dam which is near to this farm. Some other attractions near to this include tea plantations, Kundala lake etc. Boating facilities are provided in Mattupetti dam. Eco point is also nearby which is a very beautiful place and got its name due to the echo phenomenon found here.

There are the Shola forests near the Mattupetti where trekking can be done. It is a home to many varieties of plants, animals and birds. To add more beauty to the place there are many rivers that criss-cross through the terrain. Here there is a beautiful garden called as Rose garden that gives more beauty to this place. The climate here is good for growing plants.
