Mangala Devi Temple

Mangala Devi Temple is one of the major tourist attractions located at a distance of about 15 km from Thekkedy. The temple is positioned on top of a peak which is at a height of 1337 meters above sea level and offers a picturesque view of the surrounding hills and tracts. This ancient temple is surrounded by dense forests are travelers will find it truly mesmerizing.

The structure of this spectacular stone temple attests to the grandeur of traditional Pandian architectural style. Goddess Mangala, who is also known by the name Kannaki, is the presiding deity of the temple. Visitors are not allowed on all days except during the Chithra Pournami festival day which is observed in the month of May. However with prior permission from the Chief Conservator of Forests, travelers can make an entry into this temple on other days.

The only means to access this 2000 years old temple are jeeps which travelers can hire from Kumily. The temple offers a scenic setting and tranquil ambience to the visitors and the spot is definitely worth a visit.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) runs regular bus services from Kochi, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram to Thekkady. Plenty of tour packages are also available to Thekkedy, it being one the major tourist destinations.

Madurai is the nearest airport to Thekkady (140 km), but the nearest international airport is Kochi International Airport also known as Nedumbassery International Airport. Located at a distance of 190 km, Kochi Airport is well connected to all major cities of India and some cities abroad. Those who arrive by air can either avail taxi services (about 4000 INR) or take buses from the airport to reach Thekkady.
Railway Station:
The closest railway station to Thekkady is located in Kottayam (about 120 km). Regular trains are available from Kottayam railway station to all major cities in India such as Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi. Taxis services are available from Kottayam to Thekkedy at a rate of approximately 2500-3000 INR. Buses are also available, which are more economic.
