Cheera Thoran Cheera/ Spinach is an excellent source of many vitamins,minerals and anti-oxidents.It is available in different colors and texture,but for a Malayalee, cheera/spinach always means purple colored flat thin leaves.These purple colored cheera otherwise known as Kerala spinach is seen only in Kerala Ingredients: Cheera (Red) : 1 bunch Desicated Coconut – 1 cup Green Chillies – 2 (sliced lengthwise) Garlic flakes – 2 Curry Leaves – 1 spring Dry Red Chillies – 2 nos(cut into pieces) Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp Black gram (Uzhunthu parippu) – 1 tsp Coconut Oil – 2 tsp Salt – as required Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp Chilli Powder – 1/4 tsp Method: Slice the Cheera leaves into small size. Crush the desicated coconut, garlic and green chillies. Mix the coconut mixture with the Cheera leaves. Add salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder. Mix all theses ingredients. Heat Oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and black gram and allow them to splutter. Add curry leaves and dry red chillies and fry them for a minute. Add the Cheera – Coconut mixture and cook them for 2 minutes covered. Cook the mixture until the all the water has gone on low flame.
