Breadfruit, Kadachakka curry

Breadfruit popularly known as Kadachakka or Sheema chakka is a popular fruit in south India. Its even a staple food in many tropical countries.
There are many ways to cook breadfruit.

Ingredients to make Kadachakka Varutharacha Curry

Breadfruit/ Kadachakka- 1 medium

Salt- to taste

Turmeric powder- 1/4 teaspoon

Tomato, chopped- 1 medium

Curry leaves- 2 strands

To Roast and Grind:

Oil- 2 teaspoons

Fennel seeds- 1/2 teaspoon

Onion, chopped- 1(or) Pearl Onion-10

Garlic- 2 clove

Green chilli -2

Coconut, grated- 1/2 cup

Chilli powder- 1 1/2 teaspoons

Coriander powder- 1 1/2 teaspoons

Garam masala- 1/4 teaspoon

Steps to cook Breadfruit Theeyal / Kadachakka Varutharacha Curry

  • Heat oil in a pan and add onion, green chilli & garlic.

  • Saute till soft; add coconut and roast till light golden colour.

  • Add chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala; saute for fifteen seconds and switch off the gas; allow the mixture to cool.

  • Grind this mixture as a fine paste. First powder the mixture then add water and grind as paste.

  • Remove the bread fruits skin and midrib; chop into small pieces.

  • In a pan add 2 cups of water, bread fruit, turmeric, salt and close with lid; cook for 10 minutes.(should look half cooked)

  • Add the above above ground paste, tomato and curry leaves,1 1/2 cup water and salt if needed.

  • Cook till the gravy thickens and the colour turns darker when the gravy thickens.
